Title: Breaking the Silence, Building True Peace: A Report into the Disturbances in Matabeleland and the Midlands, 1980-1988
Organisations: Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe (CCJP), Legal Resources Foundation
Date: April 1999
This report considers the Matabeleland and Midlands disturbances of the 1980s, also known as the Gukurahundi, an armed conflict between Robert Mugabe's Shona-dominated ZANU-PF and Joshua Nkomo's Ndebele-dominated ZAPU. The report includes the context, case studies and long-term implications of the conflict. It makes some recommendations for repairing the damage done and for ensuring the situation will not recur. (It is worth noting that the report was written in the late 1990s, a period of relative stability in Zimbabwe.)
